Lancaster/Northumberland Habitat Affiliate Wins Multiple Grants
Lancaster/Northumberland Habitat for Humanity Board President Eddy Whichard announced that the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International had been awarded a substantial grant by the Virginia Housing Authority. The grant was awarded on a competitive basis and all 38 Virginia Habitat affiliates were eligible to participate. The L/N Habitat affiliate was one of five awardees in the statewide competition. “We are extremely gratified that the VHA has selected us for this award of $87,730,” said Whichard. “We are currently finishing our 22nd house in Heathsville and this grant will allow us recoup most of the expenses that we have already incurred since starting the project last fall.” “More importantly,” Whichard added, “this award is a reflection of the marvelous work that our all-volunteer organization has been doing and Virginia Housing Authority’s confidence in our program.”
River Counties Community Foundation awarded Lancaster/Northumberland Habitat for Humanity a Community Impact grant in the amount of $13,000 in May 2024. Board President Eddy Whichard and Board members Dick Bennett, Sandra Baxter and Alan Ross attended the RCCF Grant Recipient Reception at the Foundation office on 27 June 2024.
Habitat was one of 18 local non-profits awarded a grant from Grace Episcopal Church in Kilmarnock in May 2024. The grant of $2000 will be used for electrical and plumbing fixtures in Build #22. Funds for these grants come from the Grace Church Yard Sale and are intended to respond primarily to needs of the local community of Lancaster and Northumberland Counties.
The cost of completing a Habitat house has increased substantially in the last two years due to inflation and the skyrocketing cost of building materials. Habitat’s mission is based on the idea that everyone deserves a safe and decent place to live, and partner families are selected based on need and their willingness to participate in the building process, building “sweat equity” and investing in their own future. Habitat project houses are completed mainly with volunteer help, under the supervision of construction professionals. “This is huge. These grant awards will allow us to finish up Build #22 and get an earlier start on our next project. Build #23 will be built on donated land and we plan to break ground this fall. The partner family has already been selected and we are ready to get it going,” Whichard said.
In addition to grants, L/NHH welcomes donations of cash, material donations to the ReStore, donated cars through the Cars for Homes program and estate gifts. From a Recent Donor – The three gentlemen who arrived to retrieve our couch yesterday morning were absolutely wonderful. We greatly appreciated their courteous, kind, and considerate assistance. While here, I also asked if they’d be interested in three other pieces of furniture, all solid wood: an antique rocking chair, a pine side table, and a vintage coffee table. They decided those would be helpful to y’all’s mission, too, so you may find you have more donations than you expected! LOL!
From a Recent Car Donor – I am a grandmother pushing 87 years of life lived. A child during WWII in Vienna, Austria I witnessed the destruction of many homes, including my own cherished room with its pink furniture and a potbellied gas stove. Helping to construce a home for somebody to start building happier memories will bring much joy to my heart.
